Seville

From Sesimbra we drove to the Algarve where we had planned to stay for one week to enjoy some relaxing time at the beach. While we had been really lucky with the weather up to this point, it did not cooperate very well with our beach holiday. The Algarve has beautiful beaches but is not a very interesting place to stay during cool or rainy days. Since the forecast did not look promising for the region (nor the Costa del Sol), we decided to leave early and spend some time in Seville instead. Seville is a beautiful city and reminded me a lot of Dresden. It had a large river and lots of people are out in kayaks, rowing boats, sail boats and there are boat trips just like there are on the Elbe in Dresden. The city is very clean and the climate very pleasant, not dry as we had assumed. Seville is a hopping place at night, especially in the little streets of the old city. A lot of fun! Terry went to get a coffee at 7:30 in the morning and the night clubs were still open. Go figure!!! Of course that was out of our league.

At the moment we are in Cordoba. We did not really know what to expect from this city and whether we would like it but we really do. It is a mix between modern and old and the cleanest city of all the places we have seen so far. There is an old Mosque in the centre of town right next to the Jewish quarter, proof of the fact that once Jews and Moslems were able to co-habitate in peace. The weather is cool but beautifully sunny and we will go for a run along the river right away. This afternoon we are planning on doing some more sightseeing.

Tomorrow we are off to Madrid where we will spend the remaining three days of our holiday. I have booked a reasonably priced hotel near the centre of town and we will turn in the rental car as soon as we get there. Parking sure is a huge pain in the big cities here. Even hotels don't offer parking a lot of times and, if they do, it is at exorbitant prices.
